Targeted Pathway

Introduction

The Targeted team help children and young people who are experiencing challenges with their mental health and emotional wellbeing. This includes difficulties with anxiety and low mood.

We provide evidence based therapeutic support for young people and parents. This support can be delivered individually or as part of a group. Our interventions are primarily for children and young people where their school is not yet covered by one of our Bucks Mental Health Support Teams (MHST)

Where are we based?

The Targeted team are county wide in Buckinghamshire and have two CAMHS locations where we see young people face to face:

  • Saffron House in High Wycombe

The Sue Nicholls Centre
Bierton Road

The team also offer interventions digitally for young people, which can be at home or at school, whichever suits them best.

Therapeutic Interventions

If you are referred to the Targeted team you will be offered a Targeted Assessment.

Following your assessment you may be offered an intervention in the form of a talking therapy. Many of these treatments focus on setting goals Treatments you may be offered include:

  • Worry management
  • Brief Behavioural Activation (BBA)
  • Graded Exposure & problem solving

These techniques are effective in supporting young people with mild to moderate mental health difficulties such as anxiety or low mood. Most treatments last between 6-8 sessions often in one of our locations, at school or online. Clinicians consider and explore how sessions can be modified to meet the needs of our young people who might need some adjustments to support them to access the intervention.

Both individual and group work have proven benefits, which will be explored with you in the assessment. If one of our groups are thought to be something you might benefit from, these will be explained to you in more detail either in the assessment or afterwards as part of of following up with you.

Referrals

For any child or young person who may need our support, a referral needs to be made into the Buckinghamshire CAMHS Single Point of Access (SPA) team.

Parent/carers or young people can refer themselves. Referrals can also be made by GPs, schools or any professional working with the young person.

When a referral is made, the referrer does not need to state which of the CAMHS teams they would like to see. This is explored with you by our SPA team as part of their review of the information you have provided. If the Targeted team is suggested and you would like an assessment from the team, you will receive a letter from us inviting you for us inviting you in for the assessment.

After the assessment you will received a follow up letter outlining the suggested next step which could include an intervention from the team, support with a transfer to another of our CAMHS teams or providing you with details of another service outside of CAMHS that can help you.
