Specialist Neurodivergent Support Team (SNST)
Who we are
We are available to support all children with Neurodivergence and Mental Health difficulties wherever they may be seen within CAMHS. This will look different for every child and can include the following:
- Supporting, advising and training CAMHS colleagues
- Signposting to other places within the local offer
- Working with parents and children
- Helping other people around the child to understand their Neurodivergence and what this may mean in their current situation e.g. teachers, social workers.
Our Speech and Language Therapist, Occupational Therapist and Clinical Psychologists work closely advising and supporting our other CAMHS teams.
Support designed around each young person
We offer a bespoke package of care for those young people who can’t access NICE guideline interventions. These will be guided by emerging evidence based practice as well as practice based evidence. Our services will be offered in a variety of settings, including in the young person’s education setting and home if appropriate.
What to expect at sessions
We are neuro-affirming and will seek to understand the views of the child or young person with neurodivergence including being mindful of the language we use to talk about them. We seek to include the child or young person and their supporters in all aspects of our care planning and service planning.
How we work
Our team works in a trauma informed way in everything we do. Trauma informed care means understanding that difficult or frightening experiences can affect how a child thinks, feels, and behaves, and responding with care and empathy. It focuses on creating a safe, trusting environment where young people feel heard, supported, and involved in decisions about their care. Rather than asking “what’s wrong?”, it asks “What does this person need?” and works to avoid causing further distress while helping them feel more in control.
We work in a way that brings together the skills, knowledge and expertise of our multi-disciplinary team and the network that supports the young person. We will consider all the aspects of the young person’s physical health, development and lived experience that affect their story.
