Smokefree at Oxford Health
What does it mean to be a Smokefree Trust?
All NHS Trusts are Smokefree. This means that smoking is prohibited anywhere on Trust premises, including the grounds and in Trust vehicles.
During admission we offer evidence-based treatment for tobacco dependence to all patients who smoke as part of our everyday business.
What does this mean for in-patients?
We will not support you to smoke whilst you are in our care, please do not bring tobacco with you to the hospital.
If you have tobacco with you on admission this will be stored for you until discharge however, staff will not return this to you during your stay.
Patients with unescorted leave or informal patients may choose to smoke whilst away from Trust grounds however we ask that you do not return to site with tobacco, as we cannot accept it for storage.
Section 17 leave is therapeutic and granted to support patients outside of the ward environment. It will not be granted to facilitate smoking.
What support is available?
Your smoking status will be confirmed on admission.
We do not want you to experience nicotine withdrawal symptoms while you are in our care. Licensed nicotine replacement therapies (NRT) are freely available for your use throughout admission.
If you prefer, we can provide a Trust-approved vape for use in outside areas and during leave. Due to fire safety and security risks, we do not permit the use of any other vaping devices in our hospitals. Please do not bring personal vapes into the hospital as you will not be able to use them during admission.
