The Community Equipment Leads win September’s Team Exceptional People Award for their exceptional leadership, adaptability, and collaborative spirit in managing the complexities of the equipment contract transition from two providers and for their sustained excellence in overseeing equipment authorisation and delivery processes across Oxfordshire.

Accepting the September’s Exceptional People Team Award Operations Manager, Rob Avis said:

“Suddenly losing our supplier of equipment took us to virtually no service and a blank sheet of paper so our team’s focus was to ensure  high-risk patients were identified and the risk was reduced as a top priority.

“The Leads worked so closely with a small whole system team from Oxford University Hospital and Oxfordshire County Council’s Adult Social Care team to put together a service. It has been the best whole system working that we have experienced. Going back to basics has brought the innovative and resourceful best out of all involved. Three months work compressed into six weeks under extreme pressure gets the pulse running but the resourcefulness of our team is incredible to be part of.”

The nomination

The Community Equipment Leads – Rob Avis, Sarah Hamblin, Helen Wakeling, and Elizabeth Evans – were nominated by Operations Manager Kay Woodward for the pivotal roles they played in the seamless transition from two providers, ensuring continuity of service during a critical period.

Kay commented:

“Their communication and planning enabled the setup of an internal emergency equipment delivery service, that included temporary warehousing and redeployment of staff.

“Their work across the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, and Berkshire (BOB) system working collaboratively with our colleagues in Oxfordshire County Council’s Adult Social Care team and Oxford University Hospital to ensure all changes were communicated and actioned for everyone was true teamwork!

“Communicating as one, they ensured that patients received essential equipment – such as beds, hoists, and pressure-relieving cushions – without delay, particularly during hospital discharge, admission prevention, and end-of-life care.

“This dedication ensured that patients continued to receive essential equipment without delay, and that staff across the system felt supported and informed during a time of significant operational change. Their actions exemplify a deep sense of responsibility and a shared commitment to service continuity and patient care.

“Embodying the values of Oxford Health – caring, safe, and excellent, their dedication, foresight, and collaborative approach deserve recognition and celebration.”

Their work has directly improved patient outcomes by reducing delays in equipment provision, supported staff through clear guidance and training, and strengthened system-wide coordination.
