Karen is known for her exceptional compassion and her ability to make people feel safe and valued – whether that is a new colleague, a patient, or family member. Her consistent and reliable presence contributes to a safe environment on the ward, her years of experience mean she is highly knowledgeable about procedures and protocols. Karen makes everyone on the ward feel at home – she is attentive and calm, ensuring each person feels respected and cared for, with carers and families often commenting on the warmth and reassurance she provides.
Karen said:
“Manju and Amy called me to tell me I had won the award. I was absolutely stunned, and I started getting emotional. I am so happy and grateful to those who nominated me. I love my job, and I work really hard. I’ve been a Health Care Assistant for 16 years as part of Oxford Health. I still really enjoy it and have met some amazing people. Even though I’m old… They look after me in the team. Thank you to everyone.”
The nomination
Karen was nominated by three of her colleagues, Deputy Ward Manager for St. Leonards Ward Amy Dow, Operational Support Manager for Community Hospitals Joanne Radbourne, and Administrator for Wallingford Community Hospital Teresa Harries.
Amy commented:
“Karen is a funny, down to earth, compassionate, strong woman. She is always the advocate who speaks up for patients and her fellow staff. She works incredibly hard and always has throughout her NHS career.
“She has trained most of the brilliant carers and given them high standards of care with incredible patience and listening skills. Most of these staff members have developed further in their careers, but attribute their foundation of care to Karen, who I don’t think realises how valued she is by this team.”
Joanne added:
“I would like to nominate Karen with immense pride and gratitude, in recognition of her extraordinary dedication, compassion and unwavering commitment to Oxford Health and Wallingford Hospital. Karen has worked within Oxford Health for over 15 years, and for more than a decade she has been a constant, steady presence on the ward – someone both staff and patients instinctively turn to for support, reassurance and guidance.
“As Karen prepares to retire in the near future, it feels especially important to pause and recognise the profound difference she has made. Karen has not simply done her job – she has lived it, given herself fully to it and quietly gone above and beyond every single day.
“Karen represents everything Oxford Health stands for, and her pending absence will be deeply felt by all who have had the privilege of working with her. This nomination is not only a recognition of her service, but a heartfelt thank you — for the care, the kindness, the laughter and the countless moments of support she has given over the years.”
Teresa added:
“Karen is always the first to welcome new starters, ensuring they feel supported and valued from day one. She generously shares her extensive knowledge, patiently guiding others and helping them grow in confidence and competence.
“Beyond her professional expertise, Karen is the emotional anchor of the ward. She’s the shoulder to cry on during difficult moments and the comforting hug when someone needs it most. Her kindness and empathy extend to patients and their families, her ability to offer genuine reassurance and care creates a homely, safe environment for all.
“Karen’s resilience and positivity shine through in everything she does. She consistently brings a smile to her work, no matter the challenges, and her unwavering dedication makes her truly deserving of this recognition.”
