Allen Ward at Warneford Hospital and is an acute adult inpatient ward for women.

Jo is an advocate for our patient’s physical health whilst they are on a ward. She has taken the initiative to collect gym clothing and trainers to ensure patients have the correct clothing and shoes they need to go the gym and benefit from physical activity. Jo goes above and beyond, driving around the county to collect what they need, dedicated to making a difference.

She gets to know her patients and makes sure that their individual needs are met, through adapting the range of activities she provides for patients. This ensures all patients can make use of this service whilst an inpatient, helping in their recovery but also improving their physical health.

Jo came up with the idea of combining her activities with the Dietitian’s nutrition group, so they would work together at promoting the importance of physical health and nutrition during hospital admission.

The service Jo provides is outstanding, making a difference to a patient’s experience, contributing to their wellbeing. Many patients ask for Jo on the days she is not working, proving the appreciation for her.

Jo is considered a role model by her colleagues and demonstrates exceptional patient care – she is kind, caring and respectful.

Trust Chair David Walker said:

“Jo plays a vital role in our patient’s recovery – providing invaluable support for patients and a safe escape through exercise. We know getting outside and moving can be a great relief and contribute to a positive mental health. Jo can provide this for our patients with an activity they enjoy, demonstrating the benefits exercise and perhaps even helping them find a new hobby. Jo is an inspiration for other services, adding to what we know can be achieved through patient activities”.

Jo commented:

“I feel very honoured to receive this award. In an environment where staff are extremely busy and focused on fulfilling their own roles, I feel very humbled that a colleague has taken the time and effort to nominate me. I love my job, but it is always nice to know that you are valued and appreciated. Thank you so much”.

The nomination

Jo was nominated by Dietitian for adult mental health inpatients Rebekah McLuckie, for her great efforts to support inpatients to improve their physical health.

Rebekah commented:

“Jo demonstrates exceptional patient care through making sure all patients can access the gym safely and benefit from improving their physical health whilst an inpatient by providing patients clothing and trainers for those that require them, as many patients don’t have these when admitted.

“Jo makes a significant contribution to the success of the team by supporting her colleagues both personally and professionally, taking the time to listen and provide guidance.

“Jo has shown outstanding innovation by going out of her way to collect clothing and footwear across the county for patients so that they can access the gym, but also provide a change of clothes for patients who may only have the clothes they were admitted in.

“Jo is considered an excellent role model for her colleagues and upholds the Oxford Health Trust values”.
