Physical activity

Infants (under 1 year)

Infants should be physically active several times each day in a variety of ways, including interactive floor-based play such as crawling.

For infants who are not yet mobile, this should include at least 30 minutes of tummy time spread throughout the day while they are awake.

Other activities may include reaching and grasping, rolling over, and independently pushing or pulling themselves to move. More activity is always better.

Tummy time may be unfamiliar to babies at first.

Start with one or two minutes at a time and gradually increase the duration as your baby becomes more comfortable.

Babies should always be placed on their backs to sleep and should not sleep on their tummies.

Toddlers (1 to 2 years)

Toddlers should spend at least 180 minutes (3 hours) each day being physically active.

This activity can be of any intensity and should include a variety of active and outdoor play opportunities spread throughout the day. More activity is always better.
