Ongoing CRIS projects: Dementia Inpatient Mortality

People with dementia are sometimes admitted to psychiatric inpatient units when they also experience severe psychiatric symptoms or complex physical health problems that cannot be managed elsewhere. In some cases, these patients may also be near the end of life, yet they are not admitted to hospice care due to the complexity of their mental health needs. It remains unclear how these factors influence outcomes such as survival following admission. Previous studies have shown that people with dementia have a higher likelihood of death after being admitted to psychiatric inpatient units, but little is known about the additional factors that contribute to this risk. In this study, we will analyse data from multiple NHS Trusts across the UK to explore variability in mortality rates among dementia patients following psychiatric hospital admission.
