Howard is an exceptional Head Porter whose professionalism and commitment make him an invaluable member of the hospital community. His calm and positive presence remains constant, even during the busiest or most demanding periods. Consistently approachable, Howard goes above and beyond to support staff, patients, and visitors, ensuring that everyone feels respected and included. His genuine care for others is evident in all aspects of his work, from greeting patients by name to offering assistance before it is even requested.

Howard said:

“It’s nice to know I’m appreciated and noticed. Working for the Trust means a lot to me and I’ve always felt its more of a community from the patients to the staff and relatives. I am proud of my job working at the Trust and want to say thanks for the recognition from Grainne Gallagher.”

The nomination

Howard was nominated by Senior Leadership Team Administrator for the Whiteleaf Centre Grainne Gallagher.

“When vital packages have been mislabelled or lost, he has personally traced and delivered them, ensuring essential supplies reach the right departments without delay.

“On many occasions, he has given up his lunch break to assist with urgent requests, always putting the needs of others first.

“Howard takes time every day to engage with patients and visitors, greeting them warmly, learning their names and offering reassurance. Returning patients often comment on how much they appreciate his familiar, friendly face. These gestures may seem small in isolation, but together they create the foundation of a caring, supportive hospital environment.

“The role of Head Porter is fundamental to the smooth running of the hospital, and Howard demonstrates this through his professionalism, reliability and compassion.

“Whether delivering urgent medical supplies or stepping in wherever needed, he approaches every responsibility with pride and precision.

“His willingness to go beyond formal duties reflects his deep understanding of how interconnected hospital services are. Howard reminds us that excellence is achieved not only through clinical skill, but through everyday acts of kindness and commitment that make a lasting difference to patients, visitors and colleagues alike.
