Harjit is a qualified accountant, and an experienced Audit Committee chair. He is currently serving as a non-executive director and chair of the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee at the Building Safety Regulator.  The Regulator was set up in the wake of the Grenfell disaster, and recently became an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government

He has previously served as a non-executive director on the government’s Education and Skills Funding Agency Management Board and chaired its Audit and Risk Committee. In addition, he was also a member of the Department for Education’s Audit and Risk Committee, contributing to assurance, risk, and financial oversight. He has also served as chair of the Audit and Risk Committee at Soha Housing, where he was a long-standing non-executive director.

People at the heart of organisations

Harjit said: “I am delighted to have been appointed as a non-executive director at Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust. I am an experienced finance, governance and risk professional, but it is my passion for people, and ensuring that they are always put at the heart of the organisations that I work for, that led me to apply for the role.  I am looking forward to playing my part in supporting the Trust, its staff members, partners, and particularly its patients, over the coming years.”

The current Chair of Oxford Health, David Walker, said: “It’s vital we have rigorous external audit of our spending and so very important we have on the board qualified non-executive directors to supervise our accounting.

“I am delighted to welcome Harjit’s appointment, knowing he will bring deep experience and technical skill to our audit and risk committee. I would also like to pay tribute to the outgoing audit chair Chris Hurst, who has been exemplary in finance roles on the board, bringing to bear profound knowledge of the NHS and its finances.”

Extensive experience

Andrea Young, who will become Trust Chair from 1 April 2026 when David retires, said: “We had a very competitive field for the role of Non-Executive Director and Chair of Audit Committee, and I am grateful for the contribution of patients, families, staff, governors, and other key partners into our selection process.

“Harjit brings extensive experience from the social housing, mental health (Response) and education sectors in both executive and non-executive roles. He lives locally and has personal connections with the Trust. His commitment to public services, open communication style and values were noted by all panels.  We look forward to him joining the Board.”

Harjit joins the board as Chris Hurst, who has serves the Trust as a non-executive director for nine years, steps down.
