Physiotherapists are regulated by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hcpc-uk.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health and Care Professions Council\u00a0<\/a>(<acronym title=\"Health and Care Professions Council\">HCPC<\/acronym>)\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csp.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chartered Society of Physiotherapy<\/a>\u00a0(<acronym title=\"Charterd Society of Physiotherapists\">CSP<\/acronym>) is their\u00a0professional body.<\/p>\n<p>National Initiatives and research have shown how a broad range of professions, including<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/primary-health-care-research-and-development\/article\/physiotherapy-as-a-first-point-of-contact-in-general-practice-a-solution-to-a-growing-problem\/CAF5E8C4DD3F77A997FEECB0046EE56A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> physiotherapists<\/a> can contribute to providing safe, effective, timely care and advanced clinical practice roles in primary care such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/gp\/our-practice-teams\/first-contact-physiotherapists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Contact Practitioners (<acronym title=\"First Contact Practitioners\">FCP<\/acronym>s)<\/a> are starting to emerge.<\/p>\n<p>Read the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/elective-care-high-impact-interventions-first-contact-practitioner-msk-services-specification.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">specification for First Contact Practitioner services for MSK conditions<\/a> from NHS England\/Improvement<\/p>\n<p>Health Education England resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Health Education England <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/musculoskeletal-msk-first-contact-practitioners\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MSK FCP page<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLrVQaAxyJE3cetRkXbyXvIXPWWAnFT_sw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">short videos about MSK FCP<\/a>s<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/primary-care\/first-contact-practitioners-advanced-practitioners-primary-care-musculoskeletal\">The First Contact Practitioners and Advanced Practitioners in Primary Care: (Musculoskeletal) A Roadmap to Practice<\/a> &#8211; a clear educational pathway from undergraduate to advanced practice for clinicians wishing to pursue a career in primary care.<\/li>\n<li>HEE have developed an MSK FCP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hee.nhs.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/FCP How to Guide v21 040919 - 3_1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Implementation Guide<\/a> as a &#8216;how-to&#8217; for introducing these new roles, covering capability frameworks, governance issues and practical advice that draws on case studies in areas already offering the service<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy, Royal College of General Practitioners and the British Medical Association have\u00a0developed\u00a0a guide on the implementation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.csp.org.uk\/publications\/guide-implementing-physiotherapy-services-general-practice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Contact Physiotherapy posts in General Practice<\/a>\u00a0which provides further information on the benefits of this emerging new role.<\/p>\n<p>Delegation to physiotherapy support workers is important and should be underpinned by robust governance arrangements, to ensure tasks and responsibilities remain safe and effective.\u00a0The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy has published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csp.org.uk\/publications\/principles-underpinning-delegation-physiotherapy-support-workers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guide<\/a> outlining give principles for developing effective governance arrangements \u00a0and how to put these principles into practice.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><span style=\"color: #999999\">The CPD Zone is brought to you by the GP schools of Health Education England working across <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thamesvalley.hee.nhs.uk\/gp-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Thames Valley<\/a> <span style=\"color: #999999\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wessex.hee.nhs.uk\/general-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wessex<\/a><span style=\"color: #999999\">, in association with\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oxford Health FT Library<\/a>.\u200b<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Physiotherapy is a degree based healthcare profession which\u00a0help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice.
