{"id":186379,"date":"2015-07-27T12:12:56","date_gmt":"2015-07-27T12:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/?page_id=186379"},"modified":"2020-11-27T17:44:45","modified_gmt":"2020-11-27T17:44:45","slug":"clinical-pharmacists","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/cpd-zone\/cpd-resources-by-profession\/clinical-pharmacists\/","title":{"rendered":"Clinical pharmacists"},"content":{"rendered":"<div><strong>COVID-19 pandemic<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The Specialist Pharmacy Service has developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sps.nhs.uk\/home\/services\/care-home-resource-hub\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Care Home Resource Hub<\/a> to support pharmacy teams working into care homes in response to increased pressure from the COVID-19 pandemic, including a \u00a0collection of key training and education resources for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sps.nhs.uk\/articles\/care-homes-training-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pharmacists working with care homes and in primary care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rpharms.com\/resources\/pharmacy-guides\/coronavirus-covid-19\/clinical-resources-during-covid-19\">COVID-19 Clinical Resources Hub<\/a> from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has a collection of resources on upskilling during COVID-19. This includes a section for those working in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rpharms.com\/resources\/pharmacy-guides\/coronavirus-covid-19\/clinical-resources-during-covid-19\/clinical-guidance#primarycare\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">primary care, <\/a>support for pharmacy professionals who have been redeployed to the care home setting and advice on how to manage telephone and video consultations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"PlainText\" style=\"text-align: left\">Read about the expanding role of pharmacists in general practice:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"PlainText\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rpharms.com\/Portals\/0\/RPS%20document%20library\/Open%20access\/Policy%20statements\/rcgp-joint-statement-for-pharmacists-in-gp-surgeries.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Policy Statement on GP Practice Based Pharmacists<\/a>\u00a0coauthored by the \u00a0RCGP and Royal Pharmaceutical Society, February 2015.<\/li>\n<li class=\"PlainText\"><a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/78156053\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What does a General Practice based pharmacist do<\/a>?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0&#8211; a video about the role of pharmacists within General Practice by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society<\/li>\n<li class=\"PlainText\">Read what pharmacists interested in extended roles in primary care thought after attending an innovative training programme in the South West. <a href=\"https:\/\/europepmc.org\/articles\/PMC5569745\/\">Br J Gen Pract 2017 September; 67(662): e650\u2013e658.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareers.nhs.uk\/explore-roles\/pharmacy\/pharmacist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Work as a pharmacist<\/a>\u00a0 on the NHS Health Career website.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NHS England Clinical Pharmacists in General Practice pilot<br \/>\n<\/strong>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/gpfv.pdf\">General Practice Forward View<\/a>\u00a0committed to over \u00a3100m of investment to support an extra 1,500 clinical pharmacists to work in general practice by 2020\/21.<br \/>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/gp\/gpfv\/workforce\/building-the-general-practice-workforce\/cp-gp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clinical Pharmacists working in General Practice scheme<\/a> was launched as a pilot scheme in 2015 and closed in April 2019 with the introduction of the new GP Network Contract Directed Enhanced Service (DES) and the clinical pharmacist transferred to become part of a Primary Care Network\u2019s workforce team from 1 July 2019 onwards.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/publication\/clinical-pharmacists-in-general-practice-pilot-sites\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pilot scheme funded 89 applications<\/a>\u00a0from GP federations who recruited more than 490 pharmacists \u00a0to work across 658 GP practices.<br \/>\nAn independent evaluation of the pilot over one year showed that pharmacists working in General Practice increase capacity in patient appointments either through direct face-to-face contact or releasing GP time by taking on tasks ordinarily done by GPs, contribute to improvements in medicines management and care of long-term conditions and promote safer prescribing. The full evaluation and executive summary (published July 2018) is available on the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nottingham.ac.uk\/news\/pressreleases\/2018\/july\/clinical-pharmacists-in-general-practice-improve-patient-care-new-report-finds.aspx\">University of Nottingham\u2019s website.<\/a><\/p>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">Learning resources<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cppe.ac.uk\/therapeutics\/primary-care#navTop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education<\/strong><\/a>(CPPE) offers pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working in primary care and GP teams a range of clinical programmes<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cppe.ac.uk\/programmes\/l\/fundament-ec-01\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">.<\/a>\u00a0CPPE, along with Heath Education England, has also developed the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cppe.ac.uk\/career\/clinical-pharmacists-in-general-practice-education#navTop\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clinical pharmacists in general practice education pathway<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>which\u00a0aims to equip clinical pharmacists and senior clinical pharmacists with the necessary knowledge, skills and experience to work in general practice as part of a multidisciplinary team in a patient-facing role.<\/p>\n<p>A series of programme funded through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/pharmacy\/pharmacy-integration-fund\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Pharmacy Integration Fund<\/strong><\/a> and designed to help pharmacy professionals to provide more patient-centred care and embrace\u202fnew ways of working as part of multidisciplinary healthcare teams in GP practices and care homes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cppe.ac.uk\/services\/leadership-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mary Seacole Leadership Programme for\u00a0pharmacy community<\/strong><\/a><strong> &#8211;<\/strong> The CPPE are working in collaboration with the NHS Leadership Academy to offer the Mary Seacole Leadership Programme to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working in community pharmacy. This six month NHS-led flagship programme is designed to develop leadership and management skills to enable improve the quality of services in community pharmacy and really make a difference to the health of the patients. See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cppe.ac.uk\/services\/leadership-community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0for the programme cohorts, dates of workshops, register onto the programme and access the application form.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.consultationskillsforpharmacy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Consultation Skills for Pharmacy Practice<\/a><\/strong> website was created as part of a national training and development programme \u00a0in response to the Modernising Pharmacy Careers review, and provides a learning pathway as you develop and improve your patient consultation skills.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sps.nhs.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Specialist Pharmacy Service <\/a>(SPS)<\/strong> is commissioned and funded by NHS England, and includes\u00a0a number of items of interest to pharmacists working in primary care including a guide for clinical pharmacists to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sps.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Resources-to-support-answering-medicines-related-questions-Dec-2016.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> resources for use in primary care to answer medicines-related questions<\/a>. You can see all items relating to primary care <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sps.nhs.uk\/?s=&amp;cat%5B%5D=3236\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicineslearningportal.org\/p\/about_3.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medicines Learning Portal <\/a><\/strong>from University of Southampton includes resources and expertise that will help pharmacists at the beginning of their careers to tackle the clinical problems that will confront them throughout their professional lives.
