{"id":186236,"date":"2015-06-05T14:31:46","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T14:31:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/?page_id=186236"},"modified":"2021-01-15T12:07:56","modified_gmt":"2021-01-15T12:07:56","slug":"healthcare-support-workers","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/cpd-zone\/cpd-resources-by-profession\/healthcare-support-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"Healthcare Support Workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>Read about the HEE &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/developing-our-workforce\/nursing\/shape-caring-review\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shape of Caring Review: Raiding the bar<\/a>&#8221; (published March 2015)\u00a0 relating to the education and training of care assistants and nurses.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There is an increasing range of opportunities to work in a clinical support role in general practice.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>NHS Health Careers <\/strong>website\u00a0offers concise information on entry requirements and training, plus relevant professional organisations, for specific roles in the NHS including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareers.nhs.uk\/explore-roles\/clinical-support-staff\/healthcare-assistant\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Healthcare assistants (HCAs)<\/a>\u00a0 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareers.nhs.uk\/explore-roles\/clinical-support-staff\/phlebotomist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Phlebotomists<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal College of Nursing and Health Education England\u00a0 have developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\/professional-development\/nursing-careers-resource\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">career resource<\/a> to help registered nurses and the clinical support workforce across the UK plan their health careers effectively.<\/p>\n<p>Alongside supporting Practice Nurses, the <strong>Royal College of Nursing<\/strong> offers resources to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\/development\/health_care_support_workers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Health Care Assistants<\/a>\u00a0and other\u00a0health care support workers\u00a0working in general practice.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/rcnhca.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">First Steps for HCAs<\/a> is the RCN&#8217;s\u00a0 learning resource for health care assistants. It can be used as part of your workplace induction programme or in your own time. The updated version has additional content relevant wherever you work, a reflective diary and much more.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As a\u00a0Care Support Worker\u00a0or Health Care Assistant you can register with<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsprofessionals.nhs.uk\/Help-and-Advice\/Recruitment-FAQs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <strong>NHS Professionals <\/strong><\/a>for flexible work opportunities suited to your skills and competency levels.<\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsplatform.org\/organisation\/buckinghamshire-oxfordshire-and-berkshire-west-excellence-centre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong> Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and West Berk Excellence Centre<\/strong><\/a> is a new partnership of organisations across health and social, including private and voluntary employers and training providers, who are committed to improving access to high quality vocational education and training to the support workforce.<\/p>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">The Talent for Care<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p>Health Education England is developing a strategy for staff in pay bands 1-4 who have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/talent-care-widening-participation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Talent for Care.<\/a> The aim is to widen their route to\u00a0 training and scale up best practice in order to provide some of the best patient care in the world.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">The Care Certificate<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p>Following the Francis Inquiry the government commissioned a report to review and make recommendations on the recruitment, learning and development, management and support of healthcare assistants and social care support workers. The\u00a0 resulting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/236212\/Cavendish_Review.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cavendish Review<\/a>,\u00a0published in July 2013, \u00a0found that the training of healthcare assistants and social care support workers was inconsistent, and one of the recommendations was the development of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsforcare.org.uk\/Standards\/Care-Certificate\/Care-Certificate.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Care Certificate<\/a> .<\/p>\n<p>The Care Certificate was launched in April 2015 and is designed to give everyone the confidence that all new health care assistants are introduced to the values, knowledge, skills and behaviours required to provide safe and compassionate care.\u00a0It will ensure that healthcare assistants and social care support workers receive consistent, quality and transferable learning and development in the fundamentals of care.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The CQC will reference the Care Certificate in regulation 18 (staffing) &amp; regulation 19 (fit and proper persons employed) and see the achievement of the Care Certificate as a minimum in their good and outstanding categories.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Read about<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nsahealth.org.uk\/the-care-certificate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0implementation of the Care Certificate<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0National Skills Academy for Health Resources website.<\/p>\n<p>The supporting documents for the Care Certificate can be found on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsforhealth.org.uk\/standards\/item\/216-the-care-certificate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skills for Health website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Health Education England e-Learning for Healthcare (HEE e-LfH)\u00a0 free Care Certificate e-learning programme is available\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-lfh.org.uk\/programmes\/care-certificate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/Hints-and-Tips-for-GPs-assessing-the-Care-Certificate.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hints and Tips for GPs assessing the Care Certificate<\/a>\u00a0will help you understand how the standards could be assessed in General Practice.<\/p>\n<p>The Skills Platform has published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsplatform.org\/content\/care-certificate-implementation-toolkit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Care Certification Implementation Toolkit<\/a> to assist those responsible for delivering the Care Certificate to new employees as part of their induction, but also opportunities for existing staff to refresh or improve their knowledge and skills. The standards and assessment criteria can be used as a tool for assessing training needs.<\/p>\n<p>To meet the needs of staff as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-lfh.org.uk\/programmes\/hcsw2020-accelerated-care-certificate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">HCSW2020 Accelerated Care Certificate<\/a> takes a blended approach to learning, using a mix of existing e-learning resources available on the e-Learning for Healthcare Hub and practical competency-based learning.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">Care Navigators<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p><strong>Care Navigators<\/strong> are just one of the new workforce roles suggested by the\u00a0Primary Care Workforce Commission\u00a0in its\u00a0report <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2018\/03\/The-Future-of-Primary-Care-report-HEE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Future of Primary Care report <\/a>\u00a0to support GPs in managing their workload.<\/p>\n<p>The role of Care Navigators is to navigate patients and \/ or carer to the source of help they need be it medical, social\u00a0 or housing guidance. They can work across \u00a0a range of different care settings and can have a range of different titles including Patient navigator, Primary care navigator, Care coordinator, Health navigator or Life navigator. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/care-navigation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Care Navigation: A Competency Framework<\/a> (HEE 2016) describes the core tasks, purpose and core competencies of \u2018care navigation\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Care Navigators are considered to be one of the &#8220;truly innovative&#8221; roles in a review of the new roles crossing boundaries in health and social care.
