{"id":185883,"date":"2015-03-17T22:47:33","date_gmt":"2015-03-17T22:47:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/?page_id=185883"},"modified":"2020-11-27T17:46:15","modified_gmt":"2020-11-27T17:46:15","slug":"general-practice-nurses","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/cpd-zone\/cpd-resources-by-profession\/general-practice-nurses\/","title":{"rendered":"General Practice Nurses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>&#8220;The general practice nursing workforce must be at the forefront of <\/em><br \/>\n<em>leading change by delivering better health outcomes in primary care, <\/em><br \/>\n<em>and by making primary care \u2018the place to be\u2019 for ambitious nurses <\/em><br \/>\n<em>who deliver world class care and support our population to live well.&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/general-practice-nursing\">HEE<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Coronavirus resources<\/strong>: (see the <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/cpd-zone\/cpd-by-topic\/infections-diseases-and-immunisation\/\">Infections Diseases<\/a> topic page for key learning resources)<\/p>\n<p>The Queens Nursing Institute has developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qni.org.uk\/nursing-in-the-community\/care-home-nurses-network\/coronavirus-information-centre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Coronavirus Information Centre.<\/a> As well as a series of rapid training plans to assist nurses making the transition into unfamiliar settings, it includes links to key resources for\u00a0 nurses working in community, primary care and care home settings.<\/p>\n<p>The Queens Nursing Institute has also developed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qni.org.uk\/resources\/minimum-bridging-competencies-for-general-practice-nurses-transitioning-to-community-nursing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minimum Bridging Competencies for General Practice Nurses Transitioning to Community Nursing<\/a>\u00a0to support Practice Nurses who may be redeployed into the community.<\/p>\n<p>In addition the <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.e-lfh.org.uk\/Catalogue\/Index?HierarchyId=0_45016&amp;programmeId=45016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">HEE e-LfH COVID-19 (coronavirus) collection<\/a> has new e-learning programmes for nurses in primary care including <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.e-lfh.org.uk\/Component\/Details\/629659\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nurses deployed into a primary and community care setting<\/a>\u00a0and <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.e-lfh.org.uk\/Component\/Details\/642859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Supporting Student Nurses in General Practice.<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>The profile of nursing in General Practice is being raised in response to the drive for improvement in the delivery of primary care. The role of the nurse in General Practice is seen as being crucial to the ways in which health services will need to change in response to NHS England\u2019s \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/5yfv-web.pdf\">Five Year Forward View\u2019<\/a>\u00a0and the new models of care that are proposed.<\/p>\n<p>Read about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcareers.nhs.uk\/explore-roles\/nursing\/general-practice-nurse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Practice Nursing<\/a>\u00a0on\u00a0the NHS\u00a0Health Careers\u00a0website.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gpnen.org.uk\/\">General Practice Nurse Education Network<\/a> (GPNEN)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>GPNEN from The Queen\u2019s Nursing Institute (QNI) aims to provide:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>a \u201cone-stop shop\u201d for continuing professional development initiatives and support<\/li>\n<li>a framework for GPN practice education roles within primary care<\/li>\n<li>competency frameworks<\/li>\n<li>links to key policies and public consultations that may have relevance to General Practice Nursing<\/li>\n<li>standards of education and practice for GPNs<\/li>\n<li>resources for student nurses or those new to General Practice Nursing &#8211; including job opportunities, terms and conditions and related issues and a discussion board.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/future.nhs.uk\/GPFV\/groupHome\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">GPN Single Point<\/a><\/strong> is the area on the FutureNHS collaboration site which brings together information for people working on the GPN 10 point plan to increase the number of nurses who want to work in General Practice. The report (published 2015) was commissioned by Health Education England from the <strong>Primary Care Workforce Commission<\/strong> and chaired by Professor Martin Roland. It recognises that GPN\u00a0numbers need to increase, and that there is a lack of opportunities for nurses in primary care to develop their skills despite the wide range of responsibilities they have very successfully taken on, particularly in the management of long term conditions.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Read about the report in a <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/cpd\/the-role-of-gpns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">blog from\u00a0Zoe Berry,<\/a>\u00a0Programme Director (General Practice Nursing), HETV.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The HEE\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/shape-caring-review\">Shape of Caring Review \u00a0(\u2018Raising the Bar<\/a>\u2018)\u00a0(March 2015)\u00a0 relating to the education and training of nursing and care assistants went out for consultation\u00a0September\/October 2015.\u00a0 You can also read HEE\u2019s summary of the responses\u00a0and an outline of the steps HEE proposes to take.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Review found a wealth of excellent practice in the education and training of care assistants and Registered Nurses but also found variability.\u00a0The NMC has already embarked on a fundamental review of the skills and competencies that future nurses will be expected to meet for pre-registration that \u00a0aims to ensure that future training reflects the changing health and care landscape, the blurring of professional boundaries and the increased expectations of nurses\u2019 capabilities.<\/li>\n<li>Follow progress of the Review via the Care Matters Newsletter on the \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/shape-caring-review\">Shape of Caring webpage<\/a>. Also\u00a0watch the video animations created to explore some of the key themes of the Review on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLrVQaAxyJE3dxWTFXig6dPaOrRWLQIq06\">HEE YouTube channel<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The Shape of caring Review recommended developing a new <strong>Nurse Associate<\/strong> role to work alongside care assistants and registered nurses to deliver hands-on care, focusing on ensuring patients continue to get the compassionate care they deserve.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Over 1,000 Nursing Associates have begun training and huge interest in the role and high demand from providers wanting to offer training places has led the creation of a further 1,000 training places.\u00a0Read all about the new role <a href=\"https:\/\/hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/developing-our-workforce\/nursing\/nursing-associate-new-support-role-nursing\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">Competencies and Standards<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p><strong>QNI General Practice Nurse Standards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The QNI has published two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qni.org.uk\/nursing-in-the-community\/practice-standards-models\/general-practice-nurse-standards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">General Practice Nurse standards<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Voluntary Standards for nurses new to General Practice Nursing<\/strong> (2020) to develop the standards as one of the actions arising from the strategic document, \u2018Developing confidence, capability and capacity: Ten point action plan for General Practice Nursing\u2019 (NHSE, 2017). The standards have been designed to provide a structured overview of best practice for nurses at the beginning of the career pathway. The standards also aim to give guidance to education providers developing introductory GPN programmes and Specialist Practitioner Qualification programmes.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Voluntary Standards for senior General Practice Nurses<\/strong> (2017) focused on senior General Practice Nurses and have been designed to reflect the requirements of this role. These standards seek to guide senior GPN clinicians, their employers and higher education institutions (HEIs).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nursing and Midwifery Council revised Code of conduct<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The revised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nmc.org.uk\/standards\/code\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NMC Code<\/a> was published on 29th January 2015 and became effective from 31st March 2015.<\/p>\n<p>The new code sets the professional standards that registered nurses and midwives must uphold in order to maintain their registration. It is part of the new revalidation process which came into effect in April 2016. There are 5 key points:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>As well as reinforcing the existing standards the new code looks at behaviour<\/li>\n<li>Registrants are expected to make the code central to their daily practice<\/li>\n<li>Nurses and midwives must refer to the Code regularly to ensure that they are meeting the standards<\/li>\n<li>The code will link with the new revalidation process<\/li>\n<li>All registrants must treat people with compassion, ensure their needs are assessed and be open and candid about all aspects of care including when mistakes or harm has occurred.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nursingtimes.net\/Journals\/2015\/01\/30\/n\/c\/f\/040215-Changes-introduced-into-the-revised-NMC-code.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Changes introduced into the revised NMC code<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; this article in Nursing Times (February 2015) discusses the new Code in greater detail.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">Revalidation and appraisal<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<h5><strong>Revalidation\u00a0<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>All nurses have been required to demonstrate their eligibility to maintain their registration through the Prep standards since 2002. A new <a href=\"https:\/\/revalidation.nmc.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Revalidation process<\/a> was introduced in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Royal College of Nursing <\/strong>has published an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\/professional-development\/publications\/rcn-your-essential-guide-to-nmc-revalidation-pub-009321\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Essential Guide to NMC revalidation<\/a> (updated August 2020) which provides key information on NMC revalidation, including how your organisation can help, the role of your annual appraisal, RCN support available, and a checklist of requirements.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/rcni.com\/revalidation\"><strong>RCNi portal<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0offers a range of resources to assist you with revalidation and planning your continuing professional development. This collection of subscription based resources \u00a0includes an online portfolio designed to keep you informed on latest developments around revalidation. RCNi also offer online learning modules &#8211; see these <a href=\"https:\/\/rcnilearning.com\/catalogue\/list\/5\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5><strong>Appraisal<\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>Appraisals are an essential part of the process of ensuring an individual\u2019s personal development in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>While not part of the appraisal process,\u00a0<strong>clinical supervision<\/strong>\u00a0should provide an opportunity for nurses to reflect on and review their practice and can help nurses to identify training and continuing development needs. Traditionally accessing clinical supervision in General Practice has been challenging because nurse often work in small individual practices.<\/p>\n<p>The Care Quality Commission promote access to clinical supervision for all health and social care workers.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.360supervision.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/CQC-GUIDELINES.pdf\"> Supporting information and guidance: Supporting effective clinical supervision<\/a>\u00a0includes many useful links to help the process<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">Advanced level practice <\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsforhealth.org.uk\/services\/item\/724-advanced-clinical-practice-core-capabilities-for-nurses-working-within-general-practice-settings-in-england\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Core Capabilities Framework for Advanced Clinical Practice (Nurses) Working in General Practice\/Primary Care<\/a> in England (published January 2020) provides a national capabilities framework for nurses working at an advanced level of clinical practice in general practice and primary care in England. \u00a0It will support nurses working at an advanced level to demonstrate and evidence their capabilities to service commissioners, employers, people utilising health care and the public.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\/get-involved\/forums\/advanced-nurse-practitioner-forum\">RCN\u00a0Advanced Nurse Practitioner Forum<\/a> includes documents relating to competencies, accreditation and careers as well as events of interest. However it has been difficult for nurses to make the transition to general practice because a unique knowledge and skill set is required. Unlike District Nurses and Health Visitors, however there have not been clear pathways and access to preparation for specialist practice.<\/p>\n<p>This situation is changing and increasingly a variety of opportunities are beginning to emerge. GPN Training Schemes have been developed and piloted in Thames Valley and Wessex and other parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p>RCN guidance on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcn.org.uk\/professional-development\/publications\/pub-004583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Good Employment Practice<\/a>\u00a0for nurses employed by GPs.<\/p>\n<p>RCGP guidance on General Practice Nursing and GPN Nursing standards is available on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcgp.org.uk\/policy\/rcgp-policy-areas\/nursing.aspx\">Nursing page of the RCGP<\/a> website including Nurse Competency Frameworks for GPNs and nurses working at the advanced clinical practice level within general practice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qni.org.uk\/nursing-in-the-community\/transition-community-nursing\/transition-gpn-toolkit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Transition to General Practice Nursing <\/a>\u00a0is a free online learning resource from the QNI to support nurses who are new to General Practice based on the knowledge and expertise of nurses and educators working in the profession.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.qni.org.uk\/resources\/gpn-induction-template\/\">\u00a0Induction Template for General Practice Nursing<\/a> published by NHS England and QNI aims to assist with good practice in induction and orientation for nurses moving into General Practice, by developing a bespoke checklist with common \u2018national\u2019 elements, adapted to suit local areas.<\/p>\n<p>Check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wessexdeanery.nhs.uk\/gp__primary_care\/nursing_in_primary_care\/gpn_training_course_calendar.aspx\">Wessex Deanery<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wessexdeanery.nhs.uk\/gp__primary_care\/nursing_in_primary_care.aspx\">Oxford Deanery\u00a0<\/a> events calendars for local training across Thames Valley and Wessex.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">Online learning resources <\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/learning.bmj.com\/learning\/info\/CME-CPD-for-nurses.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BMJ Learning for Nurses<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Accredited evidence based learning modules on topics such as the elderly patient, the patient with diabetes. A mix of interactive case histories, reflective thinking, referenced text, audio and video.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpd-launchpad.co.uk\/\">CPD Launchpad<\/a> <\/strong>brings together articles from MA Healthcare journals \u00a0British Journal of Nursing and British Journal of Midwifery \u00a0to support revalidation requirements.
