{"id":183191,"date":"2014-06-04T13:37:26","date_gmt":"2014-06-04T13:37:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oxfordhealth-it.co.uk\/library\/?page_id=183191"},"modified":"2021-03-12T10:02:30","modified_gmt":"2021-03-12T10:02:30","slug":"mental-health","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/cpd-zone\/cpd-by-topic\/mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right\">&#8220;if one in three GP appointments concerns\u00a0mental health, why do only 46% of GPs do a\u00a0mental health placement in their training?&#8221;<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.centreformentalhealth.org.uk\/publications\/future-mental-health-workforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The future of the mental health workforce<\/a>,\u00a0Centre for Mental Health, September 2017<\/p>\n<p><strong>COVID-19<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>HEE have added a mental health module to its <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.e-lfh.org.uk\/Catalogue\/Index?HierarchyId=0_45016&amp;programmeId=45016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">COVID-19 e-LfH collection<\/a> of resources. <a href=\"https:\/\/portal.e-lfh.org.uk\/Component\/Details\/621531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Supporting Patient Mental Health for the whole workforce<\/a> includes a selection of introductory learning and resources to support staff in primary care and community to deliver mental health support, during Covid-19.<\/p>\n<p>The Royal College of GPs has reworked its learning materials to create specific resources for family doctors helping their patients come to terms with the pandemic and its aftermath. <a href=\"https:\/\/elearning.rcgp.org.uk\/course\/info.php?id=392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Post Traumatic Stress Disorder during and after lockdown<\/a>, \u00a0initially developed to help GP practices provide targeted support to military veterans returning from war zones, focuses on the period of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential effects on patients and key workers during and after this period.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.minded.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MindEd<\/a> provides free educational resources on mental health for everyone.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/covid.minded.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MindEd Coronavirus Staff Resilience Hub<\/strong><\/a> provides support for frontline staff working through the COVID-19 pandemic to help manage their mental health and wellbeing.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minded.org.uk\/Component\/Details\/660879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wellbeing for Education Return<\/strong><\/a> programme supports staff working in schools and colleges responding to pressures from the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mindedforfamilies.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>MindEd for Families<\/strong><\/a> has advice and information for parents and carers concerned about the mental health of children or teenages, or older family members.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>People who care for or work with children and young people aged up to 25 who have been affected by COVID-19 (or other emergencies or individual crises) are now able to access a new online\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/psychological-first-aid-for-children-and-young-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Psychological First Aid (PFA) training course<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">Mental health elearning resources<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p>The e-Learning for Health <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-lfh.org.uk\/programmes\/mental-health-awareness-programme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mental Health Awareness \u00a0programme<\/a>\u00a0aims to raise the awareness of mental health amongst health care staff. It is designed to give a broad overview of what encompasses mental illness, the link between mental and physical health diagnoses and outline some possible treatment options.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/apps-library\/filter\/?categories=Mental%20health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NHS Mental Health Apps Library\u00a0<\/a> includes a\u00a0collection of mental health apps is now available on the NHS Choices platform. They include\u00a0online tools, resources and apps that have a proven track record of effectiveness in improving mental health outcomes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.minded.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MindEd<\/a>\u00a0is a free educational resource suitable for all adults working with, or caring for, infants, children or teenagers. All the information provided is quality assured by experts, useful, and easy to understand. It was built by a consortium of UK organisations and is managed by a team from RCPCH and HEE e-LfH.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mhfaengland.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;font-style: inherit\">Mental Health First Aid course <\/span><\/a>\u00a0helps people to spot the symptoms of mental health issues, offer initial help and guide a person towards support. The courses teach people to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis.\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: inherit;font-style: inherit\"> Instructor Training takes place over seven days and is usually spread out over six weeks.\u00a0 Oxfordshire Mind run 2 day workshops, directed by MHFA accredited trainers , take a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordshiremind.org.uk\/adult-mental-health-first-aid-two-day-training\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oxfordshire Mind websit<\/a>e for forthcoming dates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.octc.co.uk\/training\/ppipcare-psychological-perspectives-in-primary-care\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The PPiP Care:<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: inherit;font-style: inherit\"> Psychological Perspectives in Primary Care is a RCGP accredited, evidence-based training in advanced primary care consultation skills and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) techniques. The training is delivered at scheduled workshops (half days or whole days) or as bespoke training packages to existing staff teams.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcpsych.ac.uk\/mental-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mental Health<\/a> resources from the Royal College of Psychiatrists include information on mental health problems, treatments and FAQs.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcgp.org.uk\/clinical-and-research\/resources\/toolkits\/mental-health-toolkit.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RCGP Mental Health toolkit\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0is just one of the resources on the RCGP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcgp.org.uk\/clinical-and-research\/resources\/a-to-z-clinical-resources\/mental-health.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mental Health resources<\/a> page\u00a0to support GPs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #444444\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scie.org.uk\/publications\/elearning\/mentalhealth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-style: inherit\">Social Care Institute for Excellence &#8211; eLearning on mental health of older people<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are freely available multi-media learning resources to raise awareness of key issues, research, messages, policies and approaches relating to the mental health of older people and, in so doing, positively impact on practice.<\/p>\n<p>The NEPTUNE project (Novel Psychoactive Treatment UK Network) has published\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/neptune-clinical-guidance.co.uk\/e-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">e-learning modules<\/a> on the clinical management of harms associated with novel psychoactive substances\u00a0 and club drugs. Developed in partnership with the Royal College of Psychiatrists \u00a0and building on the evidence-based NEPTUNE clinical guidance, the modules provide free and easy to use training for front-line clinicians and other practitioners. [Free registration required.]\n<p>BMJ have published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/366\/bmj.l5360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Practice Pointer<\/a> for primary care staff outlining brief behavioural interventions which can reduce patients&#8217; emotional distress\u00a0 as well as improving relationships with patients and job satisfaction for the GP. The\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/366\/bmj.l5360\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Practice Pointer<\/a> presents a step by step approach for non-specialists to use in their consultation with patients in distress whether or not they are taking psychiatric medications.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">Suicide prevention<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-lfh.org.uk\/programmes\/suicide-prevention\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">We need to talk about suicide<\/a>\u00a0is a new learning resource from Health Education England which aims to raise vital awareness about suicide. It\u00a0provides support for volunteers and health care professionals who don\u2019t specialise in mental health, enabling them to recognise early warning signs of suicide, support patients and their families, as well as offering additional health services in this time of need.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zerosuicidealliance.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zero Suicide Alliance<\/a>\u00a0have published a free 20 minute suicide prevention programme: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.relias.co.uk\/hubfs\/ZSACourse3\/story_html5.html?utm_source=Relias&amp;utm_campaign=Training-Landing-Page\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Suicide &#8211; Let&#8217;s talk.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">Perinatal mental health<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcgp.org.uk\/clinical-and-research\/resources\/a-to-z-clinical-resources\/perinatal-mental-health.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Perinatal Mental Health Toolkit from RCGP\u00a0<\/a>\u00a0includes a number of online learning resources. (See the\u00a0Best Practice and Appraisal section.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"PlainText\">Perinatal mental illness affects up to 20% of women, and covers a wide range of conditions, and is one of the targets of NHS England&#8217;s service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/mentalhealth\/perinatal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">transformation programme for mental health.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"PlainText\">Health Education England has developed a set of five 20 to 30 minute e-learning sessions aimed at raising awareness and understanding of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-lfh.org.uk\/programmes\/perinatal-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">perinatal mental health<\/a>.
