{"id":183183,"date":"2014-06-04T13:35:00","date_gmt":"2014-06-04T13:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.oxfordhealth-it.co.uk\/library\/?page_id=183183"},"modified":"2020-11-27T17:51:24","modified_gmt":"2020-11-27T17:51:24","slug":"dementia-care","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/cpd-zone\/cpd-by-topic\/dementia-care\/","title":{"rendered":"Dementia care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right\"><em>The nature of dementia means that managing the condition can pose unique and sometimes difficult issues for staff, both in the hospital and in the community.<br \/>\n<\/em>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-lfh.org.uk\/programmes\/dementia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia e-learning<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h3>The scale of the challenge<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There are currently 850,000 people with dementia in the UK<\/li>\n<li>One in 14 people over 65 have dementia in the UK and one in 79 of the whole population.<\/li>\n<li>In 2018 in the UK dementia was the leading cause of death for women.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>(Data from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiastatistics.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia Statistics Hub<\/a>\u00a0October 2020)<\/p>\n<p>If you are looking for statistics on dementia try the Alzheimers Research UK <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiastatistics.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia Statistics Hub<\/a>, which includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiastatistics.org\/statistics\/dementia-maps\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia Hotspot Maps<\/a> of prevalence by Westminster constituencies\u00a0 and CCGs which show the wide range of prevalence rates across the country.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.skillsforhealth.org.uk\/services\/item\/176-dementia-core-skills-education-and-training-framework\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia Training Standards Framework <\/a>&#8211;\u00a0developed in collaboration by Skills for Health and Health Education England in partnership with Skills for Care. The Framework, updated in 2018,\u00a0 sets out the core skills and knowledge which would be transferable and applicable across different types of service provision. An accompanying handbook &#8211; Managing Success in Dementia Care &#8211;\u00a0seeks to support leaders and managers responsible for training to identify resources they can use to deliver education and training activities at tier 2. Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/hee.nhs.uk\/our-work\/dementia-awareness\/core-skills\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A research team from Leeds Beckett, Bradford and Leeds Universities have developed a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leedsbeckett.ac.uk\/research\/centre-for-dementia-research\/what-works\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Dementia Training Design and Delivery Audit Tool (DeTDAT)<\/a> and accompanying manual to assess how well a training package meets good practice criteria for dementia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/dementia-guide\/pages\/about-dementia.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NHS Choices Dementia Guide<\/a> for patients, families and carers. Individuals can sign up to a series of emails with advice and information.<\/p>\n<p>South East Clinical Delivery and Networks (SECDN) has developed the\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hampshirethamesvalleyclinicalnetworks.nhs.uk\/download\/dementia-care-and-support-planning-toolkit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SECDN Dementia Care &amp; Support Planning Toolkit <\/a>to support dementia annual reviews and personalised care and support planning. The toolkit includes a flow chart guide to the approach and an example of a completed care plan.<\/p>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">What&#039;s happening on the ground<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p>Follow the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/dementia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NHS England on dementia.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dementiaroadmap.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia roadmap<\/a> &#8211; an online tool to help people with dementia access care in their local area. The Roadmap is a comprehensive \u2018one stop shop\u2019 designed to reflect a patient\u2019s needs as they progress through the disease and signpost them to relevant local resources at the right time, from diagnosis onwards. \u00a0The main audience is staff working in primary care, including GPs, nurses, dementia navigators and practice managers. Currently includes local information for a number of areas including Isle of Wight, Cornwall, Devon and North Somerset.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hospiceuk.org\/what-we-offer\/clinical-and-care-support\/hospice-enabled-dementia-care\/dementia-end-of-life-care-community-of-practice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia and end of life care Community of Practice<\/a>\u00a0is a joint venture between Dementia UK and Hospice UK which seeks to bring together practitioners and clinical leaders keen to build their skills, knowledge and confidence in providing high quality palliative and end of life care for people and their families affected by dementia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">CPD resources<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p>See the collection of resources for GPs and healthcare professionals on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rcgp.org.uk\/clinical-and-research\/resources\/a-to-z-clinical-resources\/dementia.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">RCGP Dementia page.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcheck.nhs.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NHS Health Check programme<\/a> has introduced a dementia risk element to enable healthcare professionals to talk to their patients about how they can reduce their dementia risk. See the accompanying elearning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcheck.nhs.uk\/increasing-dementia-awareness-training-resource\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/for-professionals\/how-to-become-an-admiral-nurse\/hedn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Higher Education for Dementia Network<\/a>, have developed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dementiauk.org\/for-professionals\/how-to-become-an-admiral-nurse\/download-the-curriculum-for-demenita-education\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Curriculum for Dementia Education<\/a> to support those designing a course which includes\u00a0learning about dementia.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scie.org.uk\/dementia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SCIE Dementia resource hub<\/a> for those in social care\u00a0supporting people with dementia includes guidance, information and accredited training as well as new COVID-19 guidance for carers in care homes who are supporting residents living with dementia during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/braintour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Dementia Brain Tour<\/a> is an educational video resource with chapters on the brain and different types of dementia.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/09\/dementia-revealed-toolkit.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia Revealed: What Primary Care Needs to Know.<\/a>\u00a0This primer for General Practice was developed by NHS England and Hardwick CCG with the support of the Department of Health and\u00a0Royal College of General Practitioners and is a aimed at GPs and practice nurses who have no previous experience of diagnosing and treating dementia. Read along side \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.england.nhs.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/dementia-diag-mng-ab-pt.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia diagnosis and management A brief pragmatic resource for general practitioners<\/a> &#8211;\u00a0a\u00a0resource pack with the aim of supporting GPs to identify and appropriately manage dementia patients.<\/p>\n<p>HETV Dementia Friendly Community training day for Practice Managers, 12 June 2014<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/DEMENTIA-friendly-GP-managers-meeting-11.pptx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">download the resources.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The number of people with dementia of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) origin is expected to rise significantly \u2013 a seven fold increase over 40 years. HEE have developed a film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=VgVKw-Wfxy4&amp;feature=emb_logo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Finding Patience\u00a0<\/a> which aligns to tier 1 (awareness level) dementia training, following Patience and her family as they recognise and come to terms with her dementia and ultimately seek help.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n                <\/details>\n<details class=\"nhsuk-details nhsuk-expander\">\n                    <summary class=\"nhsuk-details__summary\">\n                        <span class=\"nhsuk-details__summary-text\">e-Learning resources<\/span>\n                    <\/summary>\n                    <div class=\"nhsuk-details__text\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-lfh.org.uk\/projects\/dementia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">e-Dementia<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 from e-LfH<br \/>\nDeveloped by within Health Education England by\u00a0subject experts in psychiatry and medicine for the elderly. Covers diagnosis, symptoms and drug treatments alongside the importance of treating pain, underlying medical conditions and vascular risk factors plus meeting the needs of carers<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scie.org.uk\/e-learning\/dementia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dementia e-learning, SCIE<\/a><br \/>\nAn updated e-learning course which aims to raise the awareness and skills of care staff who work with people with dementia.
