Do incentives affect physician behaviour?

Payment schemes do seem to have a limited effect on physician behaviour in terms of the quantity of activity. The impacts are limited, often negated  by  other  factors  that  influence  physician behaviour such as professional norms, patient related factors and prognosis. There is still a limited evidence base on the impact of remuneration methods on the productivity and quality of primary care physicians.
