
{"id":30,"date":"2022-04-11T15:24:51","date_gmt":"2022-04-11T14:24:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/oxfordhealth.local\/hvs\/?page_id=30"},"modified":"2025-09-17T15:00:04","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T14:00:04","slug":"how","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/hv\/about\/how\/","title":{"rendered":"How we work"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>The NHS &#8220;Healthy Child Programme&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>Health visitors lead the<strong> 0-5 element<\/strong> of the Healthy Child Programme.\u00a0Our teams include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Health visitors (team leads)<\/li>\n<li>Community staff nurses<\/li>\n<li>Nursery nurses<\/li>\n<li>Administrators<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We provide universal support and work closely with:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Families and carers<\/li>\n<li>Community groups and early years settings<\/li>\n<li>Education settings<\/li>\n<li>GPs and paediatricians<\/li>\n<li>Midwifery services<\/li>\n<li>Local authority teams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because we know and work with many different agencies, we can quickly identify needs and guide families to the right support.<\/p>\n<h2>The Healthy Child Programme<\/h2>\n<p>This is a <strong>national programme<\/strong> for all families with children under five. It offers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Screening tests<\/li>\n<li>Immunisations<\/li>\n<li>Developmental reviews<\/li>\n<li>Information and guidance on parenting and healthy choices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The programme is:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Universal:<\/strong> every family in Oxfordshire with a child under five is included<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personalised:<\/strong> we work with parents and carers to support each child\u2019s health and wellbeing<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Core contacts<\/h2>\n<p>Families receive key contacts during the first five years:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>During pregnancy (antenatal)<\/li>\n<li>Just after birth<\/li>\n<li>At 6\u20138 weeks<\/li>\n<li>At 9\u201312 months<\/li>\n<li>At 24\u201330 months<\/li>\n<li>At 4 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Health promotion groups<\/h2>\n<p>All families can join our group sessions run by Community Public Health Associates, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Early Days:<\/strong> for parents of new babies<\/li>\n<li><strong>Marvellous Me:<\/strong> when your child is around 6 months, nearly 2, and again at 3\u20134 years<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These sessions provide practical advice and a chance to meet other families.<\/p>\n<h2>The different levels of service that we provide you<\/h2>\n<p>The level at which we provide our care (our service model) is based on 4 levels of service:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><strong>Community &#8211;<\/strong> all the groups we run<\/li>\n<li><strong>Universal<\/strong> &#8211; the minimum level of contacts we offer to assess health and development<\/li>\n<li><strong>Targeted<\/strong> &#8211; when you need some extra support for a short period of time, for example with breastfeeding in the early weeks, managing challenging behaviour, sleep, or developing early language and communication<\/li>\n<li><strong>Specialist &#8211; <\/strong>if your child has complex or chronic health conditions and you are being supported by other agencies, for example, community paediatricians, therapists, or social services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Our focused areas of public health support &#8220;High Impact Areas&#8221;<\/h2>\n<p>We focus our work on \u201chigh impact areas\u201d. These are areas of public health work that have been developed to improve outcomes for children, young people and families and where there is strong\u00a0 evidence that support in these areas can have significant positive impact for children and families.<\/p>\n<p>The early years high impact areas are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Supporting transition to parenthood and the early weeks<\/li>\n<li>Supporting maternal and infant mental health<\/li>\n<li>Supporting breastfeeding (initiation and duration<\/li>\n<li>Supporting healthy weight and healthy nutrition<\/li>\n<li>Improving health literacy; reducing accidents and minor illnesses<\/li>\n<li>Supporting health, wellbeing and development. Ready to learn, narrowing the \u2018word gap (school readiness)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Institute of Health Visiting (iHV) is a centre\u00a0of excellence, supporting health visiting and health visitors nationwide.
