Physical health
The physical health of those receiving care for their mental health is a priority for Oxford Health (and also nationally).
The dangers of poor physical health have been known for a number of years; there remains a significant level of concern over the health inequalities that continue to be experienced by those diagnosed with severe mental illness.
Although the person you care for may be healthy and has previously engaged in activities beneficial to their physical health, these habits may decrease as they face challenges with their mental health.
In addition, some of the medications that are prescribed to support their mental health may also have an impact on their physical health, either directly or in-directly.
At Oxford Health, we work to look after our patients and service users physical health and mental health together. Collaboration between patient, carer, Primary Care services (i.e. GP) and Mental Health Teams is vital to ensure improved physical health outcomes.
As a carer, you may notice changes in your relative’s physical health and changing lifestyle choices that may be less obvious to the health care professionals.
By supporting those you care for to discuss these concerns with their GP, keyworker or care team allows timely assessment and interventions to reduce the risk of preventable conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and coronary heart disease.
Oxford Health has a specialist team of nurses to support with physical health and your keyworker or care team can share these details with you.
