Problems can build up to a point where you feel that you are struggling to cope. Young people often self-harming feels like a release and begin to use it as a coping mechanism to deal with their worries.<\/p>\n<h2>What does it look like?<\/h2>\n<p>Self-harm can be through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cutting<\/li>\n<li>burning<\/li>\n<li>pinching<\/li>\n<li>biting<\/li>\n<li>scratching yourself, and<\/li>\n<li>pulling your hair out<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Self-harm can also be through:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>overdosing<\/li>\n<li>making yourself sick or ill<\/li>\n<li>abusing alcohol or drugs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"#NoHarmDone Things Can Change | Self-Harm | YoungMinds\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kT5cr-HTTEQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2>When does it happen?<\/h2>\n<p>You may self-harm because you feel anxious, depressed or stressed and feel you can\u2019t turn to friends\/family for support or help. There are lots of other reasons young people self-harm, these are sometimes called \u2018triggers\u2019.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>bullying<\/li>\n<li>changes at home<\/li>\n<li>stress at school<\/li>\n<li>problems with friends<\/li>\n<li>feeling lonely<\/li>\n<li>bereavement<\/li>\n<li>struggles with food<\/li>\n<li>confidence issues<\/li>\n<li>abuse (verbal, physical or sexual)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What can I do?<\/h2>\n<p>When you feel anxious or upset, do something you enjoy or try to think about other things can be a way to help you stop hurting yourself. If you can hang on in there, and resist the urge to self-harm for just 30 seconds to begin with, you can start to break the habit.<\/p>\n<p>You could try:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Phoning a friend<\/li>\n<li>Listening to music, drawing or reading<\/li>\n<li>Writing down your feelings in a diary<\/li>\n<li>Breathing slowly, in through the nose and out through the mouth<\/li>\n<li>Going for a walk or a run, dancing, exercising or playing sport<\/li>\n<li>Focusing on objects around you and thinking about what they look, sound, smell, taste and feel like.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you still want to hurt yourself:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Put your hands into a bowl of ice cubes for a short time or rub ice on the part of your body you feel like injuring<\/li>\n<li>Use a red pen or lipstick to mark your body instead of cutting<\/li>\n<li>Find a safe punching bag like some pillows<\/li>\n<li>Put a rubber band around your wrist and try flicking it<\/li>\n<li>Have a cold shower<\/li>\n<li>Stick plasters on the parts of your body you want to injure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"nhsuk-care-card nhsuk-care-card--non-urgent\">\n                <div class=\"nhsuk-care-card__heading-container\">\n                    <h3 class=\"nhsuk-care-card__heading\"><span role=\"text\"><span class=\"nhsuk-u-visually-hidden\">Non-urgent advice: <\/span>Where to get help<\/span><\/h3>\n                    <span class=\"nhsuk-care-card__arrow\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/span>\n                <\/div>\n                <div class=\"nhsuk-care-card__content\">\n<p>Speaking to a trusted person about how you are feeling; this could be family, friend, doctor, school nurse, teacher or counsellor.
