Creating a neurodivergent-friendly classroom is about fostering an environment where all learners feel valued and supported. Everyone has different styles of learning and ways of thinking, so it’s important to recognise and embrace this. It benefits everyone, including neurotypical students, when classrooms are designed with neurodiversity being considered as this enhances the flexibility and engagement of all students.

SEN Support Guidance

Using SEN support guidance and code of practice, schools are equipped with tools to create an inclusive learning environment. These resources help educators understand each child’s unique profile, adapt the curriculum to suit diverse needs and implement strategies that foster engagement and success.

Buckinghamshire has its own structure of SEN support guidance, which outlines approaches for supporting a wide range of neurodivergent learners and those with other educational needs.

Autism and ADHD and Special Educational Needs (SEN)

Autism and ADHD are both classed as Special Educational Needs (SEN)which means schools, colleges and employers have a duty of care to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to ensure accessibility, even without a diagnosis. These adjustments will vary depending on the individual and the context, but they should be guided by collaboration, respect and a commitment to inclusion. However, educational settings have a duty of care to make adjustments even before a diagnosis and students do not need a formal diagnosis for schools to put specialist support in place.

Guidance and Support

If you require further information and guidance regarding your child’s rights before diagnosis, please follow these links:

Ordinarily Available Provision outlines the provision that the local authority expects to be made available for all Early Years children and children with special educational needs and or disabilities. The Buckinghamshire SEND Team is currently collaborating with a wide range of stakeholders to update the 2019 Ordinarily Available Provision (OAP) guidance.

SEND code of practice offers guidance explaining how children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities should be supported in schools. This should be used by schools to help assess and meet the needs of neurodiverse children.

SEND Support Line was developed to make it easier for schools, families, and professionals to contact the Buckinghamshire Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) team. This service is open to everyone seeking advice and support about SEND.

While we can offer guidance (such as on EHCPs) and help you understand what support your child is entitled to and what your rights are, we don’t hold the responsibility of ensuring the schools are implementing these adjustments- but we can support you advocating for your child.

Approaching a conversation with schools regarding reasonable adjustments

Understanding Your Childs Need

Read through the diagnostic report and any other professional reports that may be relevant (EHCP, Educational psychologist report etc)

If you are still waiting for a diagnosis, you could consider what needs are not being met at school yet

Learn about your rights

Familiarise yourself with the Equality Act 2010, review the SEND Code of Practice and the schools SEN policy

Request a meeting

Contact the schools SENCO or headteacher and ask for a formal meeting to discuss your child’s needs and adjustments

Prepare for the meeting

– Bring documents and a list of specific adjustments you are seeking.

– Ensure you are able to explain your adjustments.

– You can also take a trusted advocate with you.

Have a conversation

Stay calm and collaborative

Ensure the focus is on your child’s wellbeing

Agree on actions:

Request that the agreements are documented in an Individual Support Plan or added to your child’s EHCP, if they have one.

Ask for timelines and clarify who will be responsible for implementing each adjustment. – Clarify how progress with be monitored

Follow up

Check in regularly with the school to see which adjustments are working.

If the adjustments are not working consider setting up another meeting to discuss how this can be changed.

Reasonable adjustments

There are a range of ways in which schools can support neurodivergent students. However, there are no one-size-fits-all solutions, so although we can offer tools that can support your child’s journey, we are unable to tell you exactly what will help as each child has unique needs.

Examples of adjustments

It is important to collaborate with schools and have conversations about the needs of your child and acknowledge that these may shift overtime. The school’s role is to listen, learn and adjust their support to work with you to create an environment where every child can thrive. The examples below may be applicable to your child’s needs but remember that the adjustments made by schools may not be limited to these.

Consider sensory needs

Allowing movement

Providing regulation areas

Utilising EHCPS

Visual timetables

Providing checklists

Classroom break passes

Clear and concise instructions

Provide visuals for visual learners

Targeted Interventions

Many schools often use targeted interventions such as:

Zones of regulation

Emotional Literacy Support Assistant (ELSA)

Lego therapy

These interventions support children who are emotionally dysregulated to help them build their self-regulation and emotional resilience. Check with your child’s school to see if these interventions are available. Not all schools offer them, but many do especially as part of their Ordinarily Available Provision or SEN support.

<iframe loading="lazy" title="How do I help? They can help you:

understand your rights

prepare for meetings with the school or local authority

navigate EHCP processes and appeals

advocate for reasonable adjustments and support plans

School Governors

You can also contact your child’s school governors as they have the role of ensuring the school is meeting its legal duties, including those related to SEND. You can raise concerns with them if you feel adjustments aren’t being made or policies aren’t being followed.

Other Resources

The following resources provide additional information and guidance you may find helpful:

Top tips for supporting neurodivergent students

Reasonable Adjustments for Neurodivergent Children

Lunchtime and break guidance for parents and carers of autistic children

SEND and moving between stages of education

Homework guidance for parents and carers of autistic children

Homework guidance for Teachers working with autistic children

Exclusions in England

Education Support

Many schools have a lot of experience supporting neurodivergent learners, including those that have ADHD and Autism.
