{"id":195274,"date":"2024-01-17T13:40:05","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T13:40:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/camhs\/?page_id=195274"},"modified":"2025-01-16T14:57:19","modified_gmt":"2025-01-16T14:57:19","slug":"is-your-child-entitled-to-benefits","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/camhs\/carers\/family-ambassadors\/is-your-child-entitled-to-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Financial help"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Non-means tested disability benefits<\/h2>\n<div class=\"ohft-box gray\">\n<p>Young people with mental health difficulties and eating disorders needing specialised CAMHS care are entitled to apply for benefits.\u00a0 This includes Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and Personal Independence Payments (PIP).<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc\">\n<li>These benefits are not means tested.<\/li>\n<li>These benefits are not stopped for children in hospital (more on this below).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please speak to your Family Ambassador if you would like help to complete the forms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>How to apply<\/h2>\n<p>For new claims call the following helpline and ask for a paper application form to be sent to you. Any benefit awarded is backdated to the date of your first call. Please allow time for the call as the call handler will have to read through some information.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ohft-box gray\">\n<p>DLA (under 16 years):<strong> 0800 121 4600<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>PIP (16 years and over):<strong> 0800 917 2222<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When requesting a PIP application form, the call handler will ask to speak to the young person.\u00a0 If they are in hospital, you can explain that you need to be an appointee, and make the call for them.\u00a0 Make sure you have their National Insurance number, bank details and GP contact details to hand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Claiming DLA or PIP whilst in hospital<\/h2>\n<div class=\"ohft-box gray\">\n<p><strong>* So long as your child is under 18 when they become an inpatient, DLA or PIP can continue in hospital.*<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If your child is under 16 years, apply for Disability Living Allowance (DLA). If they are over 16 years, apply for Personal Independence Payments (PIP). DLA does not stop when your young person is in hospital, no matter how long their stay. PIP only stops for young people who are admitted to hospital if they are over 18 years of age on admission. payment of DLA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Help with travel costs<\/h2>\n<div class=\"ohft-box gray\">\n<p>Often when parents visit their child in a CAMHS unit, there is an informal meeting to discuss their child\u2019s care needs, appointments for family therapy, or for more formal meetings.\u00a0 Sometimes their visit to the child supports their care plan in other ways.\u00a0 In these situations, \u00a01 or 2 visits per week may also be considered for an appointment.<\/p>\n<p>If you are on qualifying benefits*, you may be eligible for full reimbursement when travelling for appointments. \u00a0Please ask your ward team or family ambassador for more information.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ui-provider a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z ab ac ae af ag ah ai aj ak\" dir=\"ltr\">If you have savings of less than \u00a316,000, with a small gap between your income and outgoings, you may be eligible for part or all your travel costs (for appointments) to be reimbursed.\u00a0 <a class=\"fui-Link ___1rxvrpe f2hkw1w f3rmtva f1ewtqcl fyind8e f1k6fduh f1w7gpdv fk6fouc fjoy568 figsok6 f1hu3pq6 f11qmguv f19f4twv f1tyq0we f1g0x7ka fhxju0i f1qch9an f1cnd47f fqv5qza f1vmzxwi f1o700av f13mvf36 f1cmlufx f9n3di6 f1ids18y f1tx3yz7 f1deo86v f1eh06m1 f1iescvh fhgqx19 f1olyrje f1p93eir f1nev41a f1h8hb77 f1lqvz6u f10aw75t fsle3fq f17ae5zn\" title=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/5a7b84c8e5274a7318b8f2f9\/dh_116385.pdf\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/5a7b84c8e5274a7318b8f2f9\/dh_116385.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Link Government guidance\">Government guidance<\/a>\u00a0states \u201cPatients who might not consider themselves to be on a low income should be encouraged to make a claim if their savings are below the current limits.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If this applies to you, please click this link <a href=\"https:\/\/applications.nhsbsa.nhs.uk\/LISWebAppStaticData\/begin.do\">LIS Orders (nhsbsa.nhs.uk)<\/a> and order an HC1 form and an HC5 form.<\/p>\n<p>*Qualifying benefits<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Income Support<\/li>\n<li>income-based Jobseeker&#8217;s Allowance<\/li>\n<li>income-related Employment and Support Allowance<\/li>\n<li>Pension Credit Guarantee Credit<\/li>\n<li>you receive Universal Credit and meet the criteria<\/li>\n<li>NHS tax credit exemption certificate (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/nhs-services\/help-with-health-costs\/healthcare-travel-costs-scheme-htcs\/\">conditions apply<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If travelling <em>for visits<\/em> is placing you in financial hardship, please talk to the unit Social Worker or your Family Ambassador.<\/p>\n<p>If you are in employment (or have previously been in the armed forces) and are experiencing financial hardship you may want to explore your employer\u2019s financial hardship fund.<\/p>\n<p>More information in a printable form is available in our \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/camhs\/carers\/family-ambassadors\/locally-developed-resources\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">printable resources<\/a>\u2019 page.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Carers Allowance<\/h2>\n<div class=\"ohft-box gray\">\n<p>Another area of financial support is Carers Allowance.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/carers-allowance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carers Allowance<\/a> is means tested, but\u00a0based only on the individual carer\u2019s income, not that of the whole family.\u00a0 \u00a0More information can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/oxfordhealth.nhs.uk\/camhs\/carers\/family-ambassadors\/support-for-carers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Carers Passport<\/h2>\n<div class=\"ohft-box gray\">\n<p>If your young person requires a general hospital stay (acute hospital rather than inpatient), ask any member of nursing staff about the &#8216;Carers Passport&#8217; as you are supporting your cared for young person during their stay.\u00a0\u00a0The passport provides access to a range of benefits including concessions on parking, beverages and food.\u00a0 Hospitals are keen to work with you as partners in care and will support you in doing this, including staying overnight if you wish.\u00a0 See details for your local hospital below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Royal Berkshire Hospital (Reading):<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.royalberkshire.nhs.uk\/leaflets\/carer-information-and-carer-passport\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carer information and Carer Passport &#8211; Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust<\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you are providing care to a patient while they are in our hospital we will offer you:<br \/>\n\u2022 Free car parking permit<br \/>\n\u2022 Free tea or coffee;<br \/>\n\u2022 Meal voucher<\/p>\n<p><strong>Great Western Hospital (Swindon):<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gwh.nhs.uk\/patients-and-visitors\/carers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carers | Great Western Hospital<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Royal United Hospital (Bath):\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ruh.nhs.uk\/patients\/advice_and_support\/patient_experience\/carer_support.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carer Hub | Royal United Hospitals Bath<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please ask any member of our nursing staff about the Carers Passport, and they will be able to issue you with one.\u00a0 The card provides access to a range of benefits including discounted parking and refreshments.<\/p>\n<p>We support carers to have open access to visiting, and to stay with patients who have enhanced needs and require extra support.\u00a0 Please speak to the nurse in charge.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gloucestershire Royal (Cheltenham): <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gloshospitals.nhs.uk\/your-visit\/visitors-and-carers\/information-carers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Information for carers<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-block-key=\"leuct\">To acknowledge your help and support the Carers Passport gives you access to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-block-key=\"9899c\">access to drinks while on ward<\/li>\n<li data-block-key=\"6d67o\">access to toilet and washing facilities on ward<\/li>\n<li data-block-key=\"swir1\">access to appropriate car parking concessions<\/li>\n<li data-block-key=\"d9409\">access to your relative outside of normal visiting hours<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p data-block-key=\"eaezu\">Please talk to the ward staff if you would like to know more about the Carers Passport.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Resources<\/h2>\n<div class=\"ohft-box gray\">\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordshiremind.org.uk\/benefits-service-what-we-do\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">MIND Benefits Service<\/a> &#8211;
