Be aware of the risks<\/h2>\n<p>Be aware of the risks: sites promoting self-harm, suicide (including overdosing, cutting, ligature-tying, hanging) and eating disorders are easily accessible. Internet bullying is serious. Grooming and sexual exploitation can take place via the Internet.<\/p>\n<h2>2. Speak openly<\/h2>\n<p>Have open conversations as parents with your children about the sites\/apps that they are using and the risks<\/p>\n<h2>3. Think about the devices you own<\/h2>\n<p>Remember that the Internet can be accessed from smart phones, tablets, gaming devices, laptops, desktops.<\/p>\n<h2>4. Investigate safety features<\/h2>\n<p>Check out the specific safety features for sites like ASK FM, Instagram, SnapChat.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Use software to manage access<\/h2>\n<p>Broad band providers can offer packages to block access to certain sites, but this can affect everyone&#8217;s Internet access in the home.<\/p>\n<p>Device specific software can be used but needs to be installed on each separate device<\/p>\n<h2>6. Consider wifi access<\/h2>\n<p>There are a number of packages (eg Netnanny, HomeHalo) that can be installed that control access on devices via the wifi.<\/p>\n<h2>7. Park devices at night<\/h2>\n<p>Charging electronics outside the bedroom at night will help with sleep.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Seek recommendations<\/h2>\n<p>Clinicians sometimes recommend apps and websites for you and your child to use to support their mental health. These are sites we have researched. If you are interested in a site we have not recommended please ask.<\/p>\n<h2>9.
